Dear Members of the GUMC Community,

I write to share information about a new and important office and faculty leadership position at GUMC that elevates the Medical Center’s commitment to the large and all-encompassing field of digital health and scientific big data.

We are launching the Office of Health Data Science and Informatics at Georgetown University Medical Center and will do so in close partnership with other schools/departments at Georgetown as well as with our health system partner MedStar Health. We have asked Subha Madhavan, PhD, to lead this important effort as our inaugural Chief Data Scientist and Associate Dean for Health Data Science and Informatics.

Subha is associate professor in the Department of Oncology and will retain her current responsibilities as director of the Innovation Center for Biomedical Informatics (ICBI).

As Chief Data Scientist at GUMC, Subha’s portfolio includes informatics and health data science-related research and educational programs at the university and collaborative opportunities with industry partners. As a first priority, with preliminary work well underway, Subha will lead the effort to develop a Master’s program, Health Informatics & Data Science, at Georgetown in collaboration with departments across campus as well as with MedStar Health to focuson current and emerging topics such as artificial intelligence, machine learning and health data science approaches to leverage big data to advance healthcare and improve outcomes.

In addition, as Chief Data Scientist, Subha will help develop partnerships with life sciences and health care and information technology industries to develop and implement informatics products and services, as well as cultivating university partnerships with external research organizations such as the National Labs and federal research and development agencies.

She’ll serve as the primary point of contact to GUMC department leaders for all health data science and medical informatics initiatives across the medical center campus (e.g. data science cores for research programs and grants, big data platform initiatives, cloudcomputing initiatives, and health big data infrastructure.) Subha and her team will partner with MedStar investigators and clinicians to study clinical data that will afford the opportunity to ask probing research questions thus attracting new opportunities in biomedical research, education and service.

I believe that big data and health data science hold great promise for accomplishing better health outcomes and arecritically important as an avenue to access new knowledge.  I also believe that Subha’s leadership and expertise can be transformational andwill be of immense benefit to lead the Office of Health Data Science and Informatics as we strive toward increasing excellence and national recognition in our research and academic programs. Please join me in congratulating Subha and wishing her the best as she leads our efforts to further establish GUMC as an internationally-recognized center of excellence in research.

Yours truly,

Edward B. Healton, MD, MPH
